Wine formed by decades of experience, a singular terroir, and an uncompromising vision.

Lost Mountain

This is the ultimate expression of our land, evoking the spirit of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains that were once surveyed by George Washington. Lost Mountain epitomizes our relentless pursuit of the pinnacle in American winemaking. It is formed from RdV’s granite soil with a foundation of our finest Cabernet-Sauvignon. Bold yet restrained, with a depth of complexity that evolves with age, Lost Mountain is RdV’s enduring legacy and the culmination of the art and science of winemaking.

Rendezvous

Rendezvous is born from a spirit of community, friendship, and gathering. From the very beginning, it was conceived as the definitive wine for all occasions. Its expressive qualities, roundness and generosity make it hedonistic, for consuming along with abundant food and conversation. A blend of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, Rendezvous is another world-class expression of our terroir, produced with an uncompromising devotion to craft. This is an exceptional wine to enjoy time and again, without reservation.

2020

While 2020 is not a year any of us will soon forget, it was a year where we found great comfort in the rhythm of farming. Mother Nature gifted us a notably long growing season, often the essential backbone to complex, age-worthy wines.

A season devoid of excesses produced wines of charm and elegance, with an underlying current of freshness below crunchy, rounded fruit profiles. They are neither showy nor timid but display confidence that delivers immediate and lasting pleasure.

2018

“Follow the house, not the vintage report. Great producers will always find a way to make a great wine” is advice that rang true in 2018. It was a year hampered by frequent rains, necessitating vigilance and draconian measures in the vineyard and a graceful touch in the cellar.

Ultimately it was a year where great terroir separated itself and one that reconfirmed our gratitude for this magical hillside. While the heat was lacking to fully ripen Cabernet Sauvignon, the earlier ripening Cabernet Franc shined, forming the backbone of the vintage. Aromatically stunning, elegantly structured, and finely etched, 2018 is a lesson in perseverance and faith in our Lost Mountain.

2019

A fantastic vintage in every aspect and the conditions were just right for crafting a remarkable wine. The season was notably dry and sunny, producing small berries that delivered concentrated and structured wines.

At once powerful yet finely polished and elegant, 2019 is a wine we knew would be unique. Decadent black and blue fruits are enveloped in fine-grain, seemingly sweet tannins that linger on the palate. It's beautiful in every manner and one that we will proudly watch unfold for decades.

2016

The final months of ripening are the most influential on the quality of the wine, and 2016 presented us with just the encore we hoped for. A relatively average growing season was elevated by an Indian summer which extended the hang time of late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon.

As a result, 2016 shows the highest percentage of Cabernet yet seen in Lost Mountain. Aromatically complex and richly concentrated, yet energetic thanks to focused, linear tannins and fresh acidity, this wine is an absolute delight and will be for years.

2017

The third of a string of ideal vintages, 2017 began nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. The warm, dry spring that promoted an early start would slow due to an early but prolonged autumn that carried ripening into October.

What started as an early vintage translated into our longest growing season to date, producing wines with depths of aromatic complexity and taught structures. Rather coiled in its youth, this is a wine that is slowly blossoming in the cellar and should continue improving in bottle for many years to come.

2014

Rarely does one get to watch the 4th of July fireworks in a down vest, but that's precisely what we did from the top of our hill. Defined by a cooler-than-normal growing season, 2014 shows the vibrancy and tension of a slow-ripening season that took the harvest well into October.

The extended ripening gave us a lovely perfume and an energetic, even coiled profile that is steadily unfolding to show layers of intriguing complexity. From its infancy, this vintage has rewarded patience and continues to offer an elegant and noteworthy evolution in bottle.

2015

The vines grow more intuitive to their place on the hillside each year, expressing greater depth and nuance. 2015 marked their 10th anniversary and was a vintage defined by dry weather and abundant sunshine, resulting in wines with plush and generous profiles.

Thanks to the season's warmth, Lost Mountain favors a rich expression framed by polished, velvety tannins. Suppleness is its defining feature, and it's a year that is at once approachable yet concentrated, with a graceful trajectory for many years to come.

2012

If Virginia ever had a textbook vintage, 2012 would be it. In a year where moderation was the norm, the hillside weather patterns were welcomingly “expected” regarding temperatures and precipitation.

As a result, the vintage shows a lovely mix of red and black bramble fruits enveloped in an elegant, linear framework. Now in its second decade of life, it shows a sophistication and resolution that begs to be contemplated and enjoyed.

2013

"If Mother Nature decides to cooperate, we'll have a great year," we were quoted as saying in mid-August of 2013. Up to that point, the season had been warm and frequented by rains, requiring vigilance from the team to ensure the vineyard was finely balanced.

Fortunately, dry weather prevailed by the end of August and remained through September, and we could ripen the crop under the ideal autumn conditions. The wines have developed wonderfully, with richness and complexity from a late-season harvest, demonstrating great aging potential.

2010

Ample sunshine and drought conditions would make a Napa vintner feel at home in 2010. This was one of our earliest, warmest, and driest vintages in the last two decades, and the power and concentration are evident in the wines.

Impressively dense, firmly structured, and robustly built, these wines encapsulate one of our ripest expressions from the hillside. They are flattering in every way yet have the richness and weight to reward those with the patience to cellar them.

2011

If farming were easy, everyone would do it. 2011 proved to be a significant test of our site and determination from the combined impacts of early-season hail and late-season rains. The season demanded agility and sacrifice to produce wines we were proud of.

In lesser seasons, the site always speaks loudest, and our hillside ensured that enough fruit ripened to produce a vintage. We coaxed the best from the grapes with gentle extractions, and the resulting wines are elegant, ethereal, and sophisticated. To our pleasure and surprise, they are aging quite gracefully.

Our inaugural vintage was one of anticipation and optimistic curiosity. We truly believed that we had discovered a special place, and the time had come for the wines to confirm it.

To our greatest pleasure, the young vineyard did not disappoint. The first-ever vintage from Lost Mountain (known simply as “RdV”) produced wines with surprising power and depth for vines in their infancy. The wines have aged gracefully for longer than we ever expected, proving from day one that this is a magical hillside.

In just their fourth leaf, the young vineyard demonstrated the remarkable potential of the hillside. An ideal growing season accentuated by a notably cool and prolonged harvest encouraged an expression with lovely vibrancy and complex aromatics.

Aging gracefully into its second decade, the wines show the vintage's freshness, married seamlessly with a rich core concentration. Refined and elegant, they are delightful, and we expect they will continue that gradual trajectory for years to come.
